Key takeaways
- Check temperatures and clear vents monthly.
- Clean door seals and change the water filter every few months.
- Clean the condenser coils every 6 to 12 months, the most important job.
- Good airflow and a dedicated outlet help prevent breakdowns.
Why Maintenance Matters in San Diego
A few minutes of care each month can add years to your refrigerator. That is especially true in East County, where summer heat, dry Santa Ana winds and hard water all make fridges work harder.
Most of the breakdowns we fix start small: a dusty coil, a torn seal, a clogged drain. Catching those early is cheaper than any repair. Use the checklist below, and save this page for later.
Monthly Checklist (5 Minutes)
- Check temperatures. Fridge at 37°F, freezer at 0°F.
- Clear the vents. Move food away from the air vents inside.
- Toss old food. Spoiled food causes odors and wastes space.
- Wipe spills. Sticky spills can glue door seals and attract mold.
- Look for frost. Thick frost on the freezer back wall is an early warning.
- Listen. New squeals, clicks or buzzing are worth noting.
Every 3 to 6 Months
- Clean the door seals. Use warm, soapy water and dry them well.
- Do the dollar bill test. Close a bill in the door. If it slides out easily, the seal is weak in that spot.
- Clean the drain. If your fridge has a visible drain hole at the back, make sure it is clear.
- Change the water filter about every 6 months. See our water filter guide.
- Empty and clean the ice bin so ice does not clump or pick up odors.

Every 6 to 12 Months: Clean the Coils
Cleaning the condenser coils is the most important job on this list. Dusty coils trap heat, make the compressor run longer and raise your power bill.
- Unplug the fridge.
- Find the coils: under the front grille, on the back, or at the top on many built-ins.
- Loosen dust with a long coil brush.
- Vacuum it away with a crevice tool. Be gentle so you do not bend the coils.
- Clean around the condenser fan if you can reach it.
- Plug the fridge back in.
Do this every 6 months if you have pets or keep a fridge in the garage. Late spring, before the summer heat, is the best time in La Mesa.
Placement and Airflow Check
- Leave space around the fridge as your manual suggests, often about an inch at the back and top.
- Keep it away from the oven, dishwasher vent and direct sunlight.
- Make sure the fridge tilts slightly back so the doors swing shut on their own.
- Plug it into its own grounded outlet. Avoid extension cords.

Signs Maintenance Is Not Enough
If you have done the steps above and still see these signs, a part has likely failed:
- The fridge runs all the time but stays warm.
- Frost returns within days of melting it.
- Water keeps showing up on the floor.
- Clicking, grinding or loud buzzing.
