The problem

How Your Fridge Defrosts Itself

Every time you open the door, warm, damp air gets in. That moisture freezes onto the evaporator coil behind the freezer back panel. To keep the coil clear, a frost-free fridge runs a defrost cycle a few times a day.

During that cycle, a defrost heater warms the coil for 20 to 40 minutes. A defrost thermostat (also called a bimetal) shuts the heater off when the coil is clear. A defrost timer or control board decides when to start. The melted water then runs down the drain.

If any one of these parts fails, frost keeps building. Within days or weeks, the coil turns into a block of ice. Air cannot pass through it, and the fridge side starts to warm up. That is why defrost failure is one of the top hidden causes of a fridge that won’t cool.

Quick test: if your fridge cools fine for a few days after you unplug it to melt the ice, then warms up again, a defrost part has almost certainly failed.

Which Defrost Part Failed?

The defrost system has a few key parts. Here is how each one fails and what we see.

1Defrost heater

The heater burns out like an old light bulb. With no heat, frost builds evenly across the whole coil.

How we fix it: We test the heater for continuity and replace it if it is open.

2Defrost thermostat (bimetal)

This small sensor must close when the coil is cold so the heater can turn on. If it fails open, the heater never runs.

How we fix it: We test it at freezer temperature and replace it.

3Defrost timer

On older fridges, a mechanical timer switches between cooling and defrost. If it sticks, defrost never starts, or cooling never restarts.

How we fix it: We advance and test the timer, then replace it if needed.

4Adaptive defrost control board

Newer fridges use a board instead of a timer. A board fault can stop defrost or leave it running too long.

How we fix it: We test the board output. See control board repair.

5Thermal fuse

A safety fuse protects the coil from overheating. If it blows, the heater cannot work.

How we fix it: We find why it blew and replace it.

6Frozen defrost drain

If the drain freezes, melt water turns into ice at the bottom of the freezer.

How we fix it: We clear it and fix the cause. See refrigerator leaking water.

What You Can Check First

A manual defrost can buy you time, but it does not fix the broken part.

Safe checks you can do

  • Look at the freezer back panel. Thick, even frost means a defrost problem.
  • Check if the vents inside the fridge are iced shut.
  • Listen for a fan that scrapes or rattles against ice.
  • Make sure the doors close fully, so less moisture gets in.
  • As a short-term fix, unplug the fridge for 24 hours with towels down to melt the ice.
  • Keep food cold in a cooler while the ice melts.

Call a pro when

  • Frost returns within a week of melting it.
  • The fridge cools for a few days, then warms up again.
  • Ice forms on the freezer floor or blocks the drain.
  • You hear the fan hitting ice.
  • The freezer shows a defrost or sensor error code.

Questions

Defrost System FAQs

Answers about frost, ice and defrost parts.

Why is there frost on the back of my freezer?

In a frost-free fridge, thick frost on the back panel means the defrost system has failed. The heater, defrost thermostat, timer or control board is usually the cause.

How do I know if my defrost heater is bad?

If frost builds evenly over the whole coil and comes back after a manual defrost, the heater is a likely cause. A meter test confirms it.

Can I manually defrost a frost-free refrigerator?

Yes, as a short-term fix. Unplug it for about 24 hours with towels down. The frost will return if a defrost part has failed.

How often does a refrigerator defrost itself?

Most fridges defrost every 6 to 12 hours of run time. Newer adaptive models adjust the timing based on how often the doors open.

Why does my fridge cool, then stop, then cool again?

That pattern often means frost is blocking the coil. After a manual defrost it works, then ice builds up again.

Can a defrost problem cause a leak?

Yes. A frozen drain or a heater that runs too long can send water onto the freezer floor or out the front.
